This is a feasibility study for the design of a two storey, single family house in East London. The site is part of the back garden of a terraced Victorian house with a pedestrian access which connects the site to the main street. The site is enclosed on three sides by the neighboring properties. On the forth side it has a limited view to the rear facade and the back garden of the Victorian house.
Considering the confined nature of the site, the focus of the design was to bring sunlight and daylight into the living spaces through their glazed connection to an internal courtyard.
The layout is organised to have the upper floor leveled with the ground floor and the lower floor sunken in the ground. The double height living space and the open kitchen sit on the north side of the courtyard at the lower level welcoming the sunlight inside through its slanted glazed facade. The bedrooms are split in two levels on the south side getting their natural light from the courtyard and the rooflights.
